Shed a tear for Mysore’s disappearing scrublands

By Sandeep Somasekharan

Sprawled around Mysore are hectares of land known to naturalists as scrublands. To real estate developers, however, they are ‘wastelands’, fit for nothing but ‘development’. These important natural ecosystems, which support rich biodiversity and maintain the health of the water table, are being turned into residential layouts, industrial estates and software parks. Before long, they will be wiped out without a trace, and without measure of what has been lost.

A lark in Mysore’s disappearing scrublandsTo a layperson, scrublands connote territory that is laid to waste. Dead, deserted places to stay away from. But that impression deserves to be tested. Scrublands, in fact, are dry, open spaces with a thin layer of surface grass, occasional shrubs and small, hardy trees such as acacias. Visit one such landscape after a shower, and the green grass has a carpeted appearance. A few months later, everything turns golden-yellow and then brown. But the terrain still looks deserted and inhospitable, until you stop for a while and look keenly around you. Prepare to be surprised by the abundance of life.

Larks rise up with a series of whistles and float down on outspread wings. Flocks of pipits erupt like clouds of undulating dust. Mornings and evenings, grey francolins rend the air with crescendos of “katri chor …katri chor”. And if you make yourself invisible, you can see them emerge and dawdle about. Your slightest movement is enough to make them scamper away, shaking their heavy posteriors, and take cover.

Calotes lizards soak up the sun, sitting on rocks with their heads raised. Spotting them, Black-shouldered Kites, Shikras and Short-toed Snake Eagles swoop down for the kill. A few steps on the grass disturb tiny blue butterflies, which take off and settle a few paces away.

A female Kestrel looks out for prey in Mysore’s disappearing scrublandsBlack ibises dig their curved bills deep into the earth, looking for grubs, worms and insects. Quails wait until you almost step on them before whirring up in a startling escape flight. Winter beckons harriers, kestrels and Booted Eagles to take refuge in these habitats, as they take flight from the cold of the northern territories. Jackals, foxes and hares can be spotted, often with stray dogs in hot pursuit.

A Grey Francolin calls in Mysore’s disappearing scrublandsOutside Mysore’s Ring Road, there used to be a continuous, uninterrupted belt of scrublands. These have slowly started getting converted to residential layouts. Earthmovers scour the soil and roads are laid. Electric poles are erected. Drains are dug. And it’s not long before the buildings come up.

An earthmover excavates in Mysore’s disappearing scrublandsStill, some life persists amidst this chaos, only to be driven further away. At times they are cornered from all directions with no place to go. Each year, the number of birds seen in these scrublands has declined. So have the scrublands themselves.

A section of Mysore scrublands after excavationNext year, maybe the birds coming this side from the north might be in for a rude surprise… It really seems to be sunset for Mysore’s scrublands.

Arcturus-sun

Arcturus Star in Comparison to Our Son

Greetings to all our Earth-walker cousins. The events of the last year, especially the last six months have been foretold as a type of prophecy, for many a decade. The next three to four months will see much more unfolding rapidly and many more upside down institutions will be shaken by the Great Awakener. The Great Awakener in this sense refers to the sweeping wave of the Jesus The Christ consciousness which is working intimately with God‘s NESARA to embrace this planet now and forever more in His Divine Love. With each passing moment evidence of this is becoming blatantly apparent even to those who have their heads steadfastly stuck in the sand and do not have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. It is time for all this to occur. The time is NOW.

You will have by now noticed the many Earth changes which have been presenting themselves as the finale of all the wakeup calls to the walking asleep. Look away from the “disaster” point of view and see the necessity of all these occurrences. All deep seated pockets of negative-negative energy and the last vestiges of dark control are being torn, ripped and when Universally possible, passionately persuaded to either change and evolve or to hasten their exodus from this planet. Yes, this includes ALL the Illuminati’s human counterparts. All areas that have deep seated, karmic induced pockets of mayhem and disorganized chaos prevailing, are being quite literally shaken apart and yes, put on trial for their lack of desire to change. These people, cultures and religions true colors are being aired for all the Universe to see. Which continents will survive, who will survive, which ones will be .allowed to survive the planetary changes is solely up to the populaces of the areas concerned. And please, do not be naïve and think that it is only the third-world countries that apply to this statement. It is rampant everywhere. Choose wisely now to evolve or forever live with your choice of abstaining from MAKING a choice.

There is much to be thankful for. Areas like America, Africa, the Middle East, even the European nations, all who had a vested interest in the re-creation of patterns and ideas that do not resonate with the higher frequencies shall be shaken. Please remember, all these areas have generation upon generation of people who continue to do the same things time and time again while expecting different results. These problems were not created overnight nor will they be vanquished instantly, or in many cases willingly.

Although the Earth Star Planet is ascending into the higher vibrations at an accelerated pace, that does not mean that all of Earth’s inhabitants will ascend with her and the people no longer hiding in plain sight and issues previously overlooked or problems ignored will be solved overnight. The only thing that is guaranteed for sure is that the Illuminati influences will no longer be present to persuade you, to tempt you to follow their self-serving destructive doctrines anymore. It will take many a year to right all the wrongs and misperceptions which have been accepted as normal or accepted as various levels of the casualties of war up until now.

Furthermore, we wish you to be aware of some things that will affect you personally. Among these are the severe problems surrounding contaminated aquifers and massive shortages in water itself. Your water sources all over this planet have been in many cases intentionally contaminated. Isn’t it interesting how some people can become accustomed to dangerous situations because of prolonged exposure to lassitude and lack of empathy? Over drilling of water wells and wells for gas and oil exploration top this list of probable reasons for the contaminations; however they are not the only problem. The overuse of pesticides, the dreadful use of chlorine and fluoride and other pollutants have affected your planet as well. If you wish to avoid the disastrous “Black Blizzard” days of the Dust Bowl era, we suggest you heed our warning and stop misusing your water supplies. You must absolutely stop planting the same crops on the same land(s) year after year. One of the many things in your biblical texts that is a classic example of mistruth is: “ON the Seventh Day God Rested.” God did NOT rest! This planet was Created as a cooperative venture through the Creative processing. All “time” exists as spatial (Universal) time; therefore all things happen simultaneously because there IS NO time. This above biblical quotation was how the origins of what was known as the blue laws came into effect. These laws required everyone to not work ON THE SEVENTH DAY and go to church services instead.

Everyone needs time to replenish their Spiritual Self. Every seventh day is not nearly enough, especially in the times you are living in. You need to take a few moments each and every day. I should like to add something else for your consideration. “On the Seventh Year the Land is to Rest.” In this sense what I am referring to and what should have been included in your “sacred texts,” is the fact that all lands need to lay dormant every seventh year in order to replenish themselves or they will become devoid of nutrients and will subsequently be unable to support life. No amount of fertilizer or plowing under the topsoil will do. Allow the soil the time to breathe, just as we suggest you do for yourself from time to time.

We ask you, how is it that so many of you still believe that one potentially harmful chemical or poison can eradicate the effects of another toxin? Thankfully you have left the “dark ages” when being bled and the use of other toxic substances such as Mercury for healing purposes were considered commonplace. We encourage you to find a good water filtration system for you and your family, YOU will need it. Please keep in mind that your pets and livestock animals as well as food producing plants (gardens and the like) fit into this category as well. If you contaminate the food you eat what good will it do for you to filter the water? That process of filtering your drinking water only will not limit your exposure to other potentially harmful ingredients that may just weaken your immune systems as well. While we on the subject of weakened immune systems please be aware that there are deadly manufactured viruses which are currently circulating on your planet. These viruses are designed to impact upon the immune system. Not everyone who contracts these will recover completely as they have in times past. While we, (those of us who are of the Spirit world and Star Keeper races) can take care of most intentionally introduced invasive viruses, we can not stop them all. The viruses that survive have the capability of impairing your immune system for the rest of this incarnation. Taking proper care of yourself and utilizing ample amounts of supplements such as antioxidants, aloe, magnesium, electrolytes, etc., will assist in keeping you healthy and strong. Celest and David have posted a section on their Awakened Hearts website, a “To Your Health,” section in order to share with you the information they know about, as well as information we have passed along to them to assist them in keeping healthy in the days ahead. We suggest you take the time and read it carefully.

You have inadvertently been your own worst enemy by creating your own problems. Due to the lack of proper planning and the lack of exercising discernment in the actions you have taken in your haste to expand upon your societies, you have almost caused your own demise. Is some of this due to global warming? What you term global warming is a natural progression in Earth’s ascension process. Obviously we are not referring to the manufactured harm brought upon this planet through manmade devices. Earth is God’s Eden. As such she was intended to be habitable in all areas and this is the direction she is currently following. Her ascension. In order to do that there will be some changes in all landmasses over time, as the oceans rise and the rivers and streams erosion process gives way to following new pathways. This will not happen overnight and people will be given ample time to relocate as necessary. The problems you have to deal with relating to this are vast in number. Your air, ground and water supplies are contaminated with dry blowing dirt, pesticides, those obnoxious chemtrails and so much more. The solution to some of these problems is simple. Stop over farming areas, allow the natural ground cover to return, stop using water wastefully and do so until abundant supplies return. And find ways to stop the contamination of these vital resources in order to insure your survival on the planet’s surface. Ever heard the old saying, “what goes up must come down.” Although this is not always accurate, in the case of spraying pollutants into the air you need in order to survive and then allowing the contamination to seep down into the Earth’s surface, then that quote is most certainly accurate.

The reforestation of this planet will not come overnight much to the tree hugger’s chagrin; please do not think that everything that is as barren as you see it will become pristine and beautiful with a wave of our magic wand. What may be considered to be a convenient timeline for many people, may not be what the planet herself deems to be realistic. The intrinsic beauty and restoration of this planet and the better than it is at this time welfare of the human species will occur moment by moment now, as more Souls awaken to the continued inevitable evolutionary leap in consciousness and the unstoppable power of change. Many of you will be prompted to move to urban areas, to areas of safety, where you can become more self-sufficient. In the years ahead you will find the self-sufficiency aspect of your lives to be paramount to your survival. Businesses will be closing, there will be disruptions in food sources, transportation, grid-power and the like…. so be prepared. Get yourself a good pair of shoes, you may be needing them.

We also urge you to be ever aware of your surroundings. People’s characteristics are being amplified by the influx of the two predominant energies; the dying winds of change and the God inspired NESARA Wave. People will act out, they will be confused and off balance by a world they no longer understand. Please also make note that “Hungry People are Desperate People.” Do what you can to help others without drawing undo attention to yourselves. You do not want to become a target nor a martyr. Life may seem as if it is upside down, however please take note that these changes are long overdue and much needed, for all of you, if many of you are to continue to be allowed to survive as a species. Much of your technology has outpaced your humanity and your Spiritual growth. All of this needs to be brought into proper perspective. Once all is completed you will find a much simpler, less complicated, more fulfilling way of living well and expressing yourselves. You will no longer be consumed by “keeping up with the Jones” and the “me, me, me,” attitudes that are ever present here now. This is a good thing too. Your focus will alter to being of service to the needs of everyone for the common good.

You are learning a valuable lesson here. Well, some of you are anyway. You are learning to walk with one foot in both worlds, one that is the Spiritual world and the other that is the physical world. You are also learning what it means to be Human. We are here to help in these transitioning times but please do not become foolhardy or aloof and think that we will make everything right and do it all for you. Remember, you, all of you, all of your varied races and cultures of people have allowed this need for sweeping change to happen, so stop pointing fingers at others. It must be you, the people, who correct the past by learning to live in the moment, not for the moment and then move de-light-fully unencumbered into the future. I think now would be a good time for each of you to contact your government representatives, your community leaders and tell them that the abuse of one human being, of one life form is too much. Let them know that the chemtrails they are allowing to be sprayed into your atmosphere in every country, is harmful and doing nothing to reinforce your ozone layer, much less slow down the manufactured parts of global warming. Let them know of the Divinely inspired plan for this world that was originally conceived allowed the plants, trees, pollution free air and water to heal this world – when it was in need of healing. Let them also know that there is no practical reason behind the engineering of genetically modified seeds. Everything on this world was designed just so, so that everything worked in complete harmony with one another, year after year after year. Modifying one aspect disrupts the natural order. This is but another in a long list of control issues that needs to remedied and soon I might add, before it is too late. Terra (Earth) will no longer permit this type of action and you, yourself, should not either. That is if you wish to (1) be able to eat, and (2) if you wish to transition with her as she continues her ascent from the denseness of the lower vibrations your planet was previously enveloped in. Life as you know it there on Earth will never be the same again, you may as well get used to the idea. This IS a good thing. Trust US on that one.

The time honored sheltering and protecting process of keeping people in the dark so that they fear no evil, has left many, actually far too many, people on this planet completely unprepared for the times they are living in. Now I call it “sheltering,” whereas others may refer to it as “dumbing-down” a population. They do this by keeping the truth from the people while simultaneously conditioning them to respond with an anticipated, preconceived response. What happened to good old fashioned spontaneity? There are far too many who fear what they do not know. They also fear those whom they erroneously perceive as better or more powerful than they believe they themselves are. This time is changing, the elected officials in all countries are beginning to fear their constituents and rightly so. It is the few who control your media, which I am sure you know. I am wondering how many of you are wondering what is going on presently. The amount of actual quality news has been suppressed more than usual of late. This I call sheltering.. In other words dear Souls, they are treating you like children because big brother, mother, father and sister, believe they know what is best for you. Unlike the children of yesteryear, today’s generations and the upcoming generations of human beings will not take kindly to being pampered and fed placebos any longer. If the truth was to come out about exactly how many Souls are leaving this planet each and every day, because they no longer desire to be here and they are no longer able to fulfill their original Soul Contracts, the domino effect would be devastating. This would cause many others to simply give up and stop trying.

In a short time many truths will come out as one honest reporter after another dares to confront and challenge the Beast. The truth about the origins of money, religions, life on other planets, will be leaked quietly at first to the general populace and then mainstream media will grab a hold of the information as if it was something new. This new, news unlike other late breaking news stories, will not fade away as it has in times past, the people will not allow it. The poisoning of this planet and of the minds and hearts of the people will no longer be tolerated. It will be a grand day indeed.

We know many of you are wondering about the lack of oxygen in your air. There are many reasons for this. Oxygen depletion should be one of your greatest concerns. This depletion affects not only the moisture in your air; it seriously damages the physical vehicle, the body. And if it is having this effect on you, imagine what it is doing to the plant life, the inhabitants of the oceans and other waterways, and to all the other limitless life forms that inhabit this planet. You are the Caretakers of this planet. You plant the seeds for the next generations to come. It is your responsibility to be far wiser and more prudent in your decision making than those who came before you. You have the unique opportunity to do it right this time around. Use the knowledge you have gained and Create a better tomorrow – today. The midnight hour is upon you and the bell is tolling. Be ever mindful of this fact.

I AM Cammeron of Arcturus and proud of it.

Know this….We are here and We are watching. When the day comes, and come it will, that our races are re-introduced to you once again, do not for a nanosecond let your mind wander to the possibility that we are here to enslave this world. This world may not be our primary home, yet it is a world we helped to Create. We have always been here, every generation of since the creation of the human race. Believe it or not, we do speak the truth.

Here is the Marketwatch article on the California gas explosion:

California tragedy reveals danger, rarity of gas blasts

By Shawn Langlois, MarketWatch

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/blast-shows-dangers-scarcity-of-gas-explosions-2010-09-10

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The natural-gas explosion that rocked a San Francisco suburb Thursday evening serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the pressure cooker of pipelines crisscrossing the country.

The vast U.S. natural-gas network consists of more than 200,000 miles of interstate pipelines, another 85,000 miles for intrastate transmission and still another 40,000 miles of pipe to connect gas-extraction wells to processing facilities.

Oily Politics Led to Environmental Disaster

Posted by Admin on June 2, 2010

by: Walter Brasch, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) had a good idea to slow or stop the Gulf Coast oil spill from reaching shore. Build artificial barrier islands, he told the federal government. He wanted the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River to strengthen and connect the existing barrier islands. The $350 million plan, which Jindal demanded be paid for by BP Oil, would establish an 80–85 mile barrier, about 200 feet wide and six feet high. The barriers would also protect the marshlands, the federal wildlife preserves, and a fragile ecosystem.

When the federal government didn’t respond, he threatened to have Louisiana do the job itself, and had his attorney general notify the Corps of Engineers that under the 10th Amendment the state had a right to protect itself during an emergency. After two weeks of discussion and analysis by the Corps, President Obama ordered the first of six islands to be built. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen, the on-scene commander, said the first island would be a prototype; if it worked, five more would be built. Jindal wants 24 islands, but believes the first six are a good start.

The oil spill, more than 200,000 gallons a day and entering its sixth week, is now the size of Delaware and Maryland combined. Eleven workers are dead, 17 are injured, from the explosion of BP’s Deep Water Horizon, April 20. Several hundred thousand marine mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles have been killed by the spill. Even those oil-soaked birds and mammals that hundreds of volunteers have helped clean may be only days from death. About 34,000 Brown Pelicans, recently taken off the endangered species list, and seagulls continue to dive through the oil-soaked ocean to get to the food supply.

Thousands of migratory birds, during a two to three week rest in the Gulf Coast barrier islands on their flight north from South America, are dying. Sea Turtles, manatees, and dolphins still need to come up through the oil slick for air; eye irritations are the least of the problems they encounter. For about 5,000 dolphins, this is also their birthing season; mothers who survive may have oil on their teats; their calves may die from lack of nutrition or from ingesting the oil. The affected areas of the Gulf are also the spawning grounds for tuna, marlin, and swordfish. Even the fish, which may survive by staying below the spill, are affected by the oil. The coral reefs are being destroyed by the oil and what is needed to be done to break up that oil. More than 700,000 gallons of chemical dispersants, used to help break up the oil, add to the destruction of the balance of nature. Its toxicity may affect sea life for at least a decade.

The $2.5 billion fishing industry, a major part of the life of the Gulf, has been devastated. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has closed about 46,000 square miles of fishing fields, about one-fourth of all fishing waters in the Gulf. The lucrative shrimp, oyster, and clam industries are not only closed, but the effects will last for more than one season. Boat captains and their crews are idle. Tourism at the beginning of what is normally a lucrative summer season is almost non-existent.

Had the barrier islands been in place several years ago, the effects of the spill would have been significantly less. Erosion, combined with deep water oil drilling long before the Horizon explosion, had destroyed natural barrier islands and wetlands. A $14 billion proposal by the Corps of Engineers, supported by Louisiana, environmentalists and the oil industry to restore the area levees, wetlands, and barrier islands was rejected by President George W. Bush. Both he and Vice-President Dick Cheney, former oil company executives, were more concerned about protecting the oil industry than the people who would be affected by Big Oil. Besides, they had a war to wage in Iraq, and $14 billion was too much to spend on domestic protections.

Much of the $100 billion damage from Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 storm, was not from the wind and rain but from the failure to provide adequate protection.

It is that same protection, those same barrier islands that were destroyed by the oil industry years ago, that would have significantly slowed or stopped the nation’s worst environmental disaster, one caused not by nature but the incompetence of mankind.

“Drill, Baby, Drill” was once an in-our-face slogan of certain politicians and the oil industry that feeds them. It is now but a reminder that when mankind destroys the environment, there will be tragic consequences.

Methane Causes Vicious Cycle In Global Warming(Hoax)

Methane Causes Vicious Cycle In Global Warming(Hoax)

by Richard Harris

January 26, 2010

Farmers in Thailand tend to a rice paddy in Yala province.

Farmers in Thailand tend to a rice paddy in Yala province. Rice paddies are one of the main sources of methane emissions worldwide.

Carbon dioxide is the gas we most associate with global warming, but methane gas also plays an important role. For reasons that are not well understood, methane gas stopped increasing in the atmosphere in the 1990s. But now it appears to be once again on the rise. Scientists are trying to understand why — and what to do about it.

Methane gas comes from all sorts of sources including wetlands, rice paddies, cow tummies, coal mines, garbage dumps and even termites. Drew Shindell, at NASA’s Goddard Institute in New York, says, “It’s gone up by 150 percent since the pre-industrial period. So that’s an enormous increase. CO2, by contrast, has gone up by something like 30 percent.”

More From This Series

Molecule for molecule, methane is much more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. And that’s just part of the trouble.

“Methane is much more complicated once it gets into the atmosphere than something like carbon dioxide is,” Shindell says, “and that’s because it reacts with a lot of different important chemicals.”

Bad For Climate And Health

For example, methane in the atmosphere also creates ground-level ozone. And ozone isn’t only bad for human health; it also contributes to global warming. Shindell recently totaled up all the effects of methane emissions and realized that the heating effect is more than 60 percent that of carbon dioxide’s.

“So that tells you that methane is a pretty big player.”

Methane in the atmosphere leveled off in the 1990s, so it seemed that efforts to control industrial emissions were keeping this problem gas in check. But since 2007, methane levels have been on the rise again.

Wetlands Cause Vicious Cycle

A study published last week in Science magazine suggests that at least part of this increase is coming from the vast wetlands in Canada, Russia and the Arctic. The methane in wetlands comes from naturally occurring bacteria. But study author Paul Palmer at the University of Edinburgh says the bacteria are producing more methane because the temperature is rising.

“The higher the temperature, the more efficient they are at producing methane,” he says. So global warming is causing these wetlands to produce more methane. And the methane is causing more global warming.

Global warming is causing these wetlands to produce more methane. And the methane is causing more global warming.

– Paul Palmer, University of Edinburgh

“This really does demonstrate the fact that we are having this vicious cycle in the climate system. And we’re seeing it now.”

It’s not yet to the stage where it’s a runaway warming effect, Palmer says. But climate scientists are worried that we could hit that tipping point.

There’s no obvious way to control methane from natural wetlands other than to keep them from overheating. But at least half of methane emissions are from human activities, ranging from cattle-rearing and natural gas exploration to coal mining.

Capturing Methane Cost-Effective

Since methane is the main ingredient of natural gas, efforts to capture it can actually pay for themselves. You use the gas for energy. And Shindell says there are other benefits of controlling methane. Methane contributes to ozone, which costs society real money because of its human health effects, and ozone also damages crops.

“So if you account for all the economics, all the gains that you get through the benefits of controlling methane that aren’t even related to climate, you find that many of the reductions you could make actually pay for themselves,” Shindell says.

Even so, there’s relatively little effort now to control methane. Mohamed El-Ashry at the United Nations Foundation says part of the reason has been a fear by governments and advocates that attacking methane would be a dangerous distraction.

“People are worried about diverting attention away from carbon dioxide,” he says. “But that shouldn’t really be the case at all.”

Restart Methane Projects

Both problems need to be solved sooner or later. But global methane projects practically ground to a halt last year.

El-Ashry says that was partly because of uncertainty over the outcome of the global warming talks in Copenhagen, and partly because of the global financial crisis. Credit wasn’t available to finance methane projects, even though they were ready to go.

El-Ashry is part of a group advocating for a new $200 million fund to help jump-start these methane programs again.

“Here is an opportunity to have an immediate effect in terms of impacts, particularly on the Arctic, and secondary impacts, like on health,” he says.

And the good thing about methane is that it stays in the air for only about a decade, so if you can reduce emissions, you can see quick results.

Why a price on carbon will not stop deforestation

Why a price on carbon will not stop deforestation

By Chris Lang, 17th February 2010

Indonesia forest destruction palm oil, PHOTO: Greenpeace

Three straws in the wind: Two pieces of policy news and a new piece of research. Two weeks ago, a leaked document from the EU revealed that the European Commission and some member states hope to include oil palm plantations in the definition of forests. Yesterday, the Jakarta Post reported that Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry is drafting a decree to reclassify oil palm plantations as “forests”.

Last week, the European Commission’s Science for Environment Policy put out a News Alert with the headline “Pricing carbon insufficient to save tropical forests from deforestation”.

There are two related issues here. The first is the definition of “forest”. Currently, the UN defines a forest as any area larger than 500 square metres with crown cover of 10 per cent and trees capable of growing two metres high. Clearly, this definition fails to address the conversion of native forests to monoculture industrial tree plantations. (Incidentally, the UN has not yet attempted to agree a definition of forest degradation. The latest document from the Ad-hoc Working Group on the Kyoto Protocol, includes two alternative lists of definitions. But the word “degradation” is not included in either list, not even in square brackets.)

The second issue is whether deforestation (including conversion of forests to monocultures) can be prevented by putting a price on carbon. Recent research, published in Environmental Science and Technology found that putting a price on carbon is unlikely to prevent forests being cleared for oil palm plantations. Part of the problem is that a higher carbon price drives up demand for biofuels (as an alternative to expensive fossil fuels). This in turn increases both the price of biofuels and the likelihood that forests are converted to oil palm plantations.

Under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive, 10 per cent of all road transport fuel will have to be “renewable” by 2020. This directive has helped drive a massive expansion in the area of oil palm plantations for biofuel, which has resulted in the destruction of vast areas of forest (and therefore increased greenhouse gas emissions). Instead of addressing this problem, the EU seems determined to make matters worse. A draft communication (available here – pdf file 98 KB) from the European Commission was recently leaked. It is supposed to provide guidance to EU member states on the use of biofuels, but it includes the following extraordinary statement:

“Continuously forested areas are defined as areas where trees have reached, or can reach, at least heights of five metres, making up a crown cover of more than 30 percent. They would normally include natural forest, forest plantations and other tree plantations such as palm oil. . . . This means, for example, that a change from forest to oil palm plantation would not per se constitute a breach of the criteria.”

Rainforest Rescue and Friends of the Earth Europe are campaigning against this attempt to reclassify oil palm plantations as forests.

Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil, with oil palm plantations covering an area of 7 million hectares. Currently these plantations are classified as an agricultural crop. But earlier this week, the head of research and development at the Forestry Ministry, Tachrir Fathoni, explained to the Jakarta Post that Indonesia wants to re-classify this area of monoculture as forest. “It is to anticipate the implementation of the REDD scheme,” he said.

Fathoni argued that Malaysia already includes oil palm plantations in its forest sector. “By doing so,” he said, “Malaysia can reap financial incentives from the UNFCCC [from] carbon trade.” Financial incentives, that is, to clear forests and replace them with oil palm monocultures. Obviously, providing carbon credits for oil palm plantations is not quite what most people have in mind when they think about REDD. Equally obviously, the UN needs to sort out its definition of forests in order to exclude industrial tree plantations.

A common “solution” put forward to prevent the conversion of forests to plantations is to make the forest worth more standing because of the carbon stored in it than the palm oil would be worth from the plantation that replaced the forest.

It sounds simple, but recent research by Martin Persson and Christian Azar at the Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden indicates that a price on carbon may not be enough:

“We estimate that deforesting for palm oil bioenergy production is likely to remain highly profitable, even in the fact of a price on the carbon emissions from forest clearing.” []

An important part of their findings is that increasing the price of carbon will not solve the problem. The European Commission’s Science for Environmental Policy summarises their argument as follows:

“Landowners anticipate gains in the future because they expect carbon prices to rise over time. This means that landowners can pay a relatively low price for carbon emissions from deforestation now and profit from a greater willingness to pay for bioenergy in the future as climate policy is strengthened and carbon and energy prices rise. As a consequence, the value of land will also rise. A higher carbon price will not only increase the cost of forest clearing but also the revenues from doing so.”

Persson and Azar are not arguing that tropical deforestation should be kept out of future international climate regimes. “That would only make matters worse,” they write. But their research has major implications for REDD, particular given the direction that REDD is currently heading – trading the carbon stored in forests and hoping that the magic of the markets will keep the profits from carbon trading higher than the profits from palm oil trading.

Scrappage scheme ‘fails to cut pollution’

Scrappage scheme ‘fails to cut pollution’

Trading in old bangers for new cars has been popular

Dan Trent and Laura Curtis

The scrappage scheme may save the car industry, but it won’t save the planet. New research shows that while car sales have leapt, as people trade in older vehicles for new ones, thanks to a £2,000 government incentive, the environmental impact of the scheme has been … nil or even negative.

Government figures suggest that the scheme reduces CO2 emissions: older cars scrapped in the scheme burnt an average of 233.6 gallons of petrol each year, compared with the average new car’s 172.4. That’s a decrease of about 26%, or just over 61 gallons of fuel per year.

But critics argue that the figure fails to take into account the energy used to build a new car in the first place. Research by the US Department of Energy calculates that the average new car sold in 2009 required the energy equivalent of 1,540 gallons of petrol to manufacture. The figure dwarfs the fuel savings of 61.2 gallons per year and means that it will take 25 years before the new car repays its “fuel debt”.

The true amount of energy used is likely to be higher still. The department’s figures refer to energy used to make all the parts of a car, such as rubber, fluids, glass, metal and battery as well as the energy required to mine and move those parts.

//

It does not take into account the energy used in scrapping older cars. Nor does it take into account the cost of transporting the new car from the point of manufacture to the point of sale. For example, the carbon footprint of the 60,960 fuel-efficient cars sold under the scrappage scheme by the South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia was swelled by the fact that most arrived here on bulk carriers. Merchant shipping accounted for 870m tonnes of global CO2 emissions last year, according to the UN’s International Maritime Organisation.

The findings have caused consternation among green campaigners, many of whom initially welcomed the scrappage scheme as a way of reducing emissions by encouraging drivers to opt for newer, more fuel-efficient cars.

Friends of the Earth says it questions whether the scheme is really as green as painted and is lobbying the government to focus on high-polluting older cars, rather than any car that is more than 10 years old. “A fundamental aim of the scheme should have been to encourage motorists to scrap gas guzzlers and replace them with cleaner cars,” said a spokesman.

The economic success of the scheme, however, is unarguable: car sales rose 30% last month and the government has extended it to the end of March.

Associated Press spins more Climategate lies

Over at tree-hugging apologist mouthpiece, Media Matters they’re getting their panties in a bunch over a Fox News story. It seems Fox was biased for a “stale retread” over Climategate data rapist, Professor Phil Jones’ shocking admission that there’s been no statistically significant global warming for 15 years. How outrageous of Fox, I hear you scoff. But try and see it from Media Matters’ point of view–little green journos all now go into apoplectic spasm at every mention of unpleasant and unarguable climate facts.

So, thanks to the prompting by Media Manglers, I’ll now prove that the Associated Press (AP) is complicit in perpetrating further Climategate hype and lies. Thereby, our readers may judge for themselves how deeply the green-loving press has sunk themselves into the greatest scandal in science.

First, keep in mind that Fox News is the only American TV news broadcaster that has reported the Climategate story from Day One. Media Matters tries to spin the lie that the AP has been reporting on this epoch-changing event in a ‘just-the-facts fashion.’ But, as we shall see, in AP’s case ‘just the facts’ means doling out hype and lies supportive of the global warming hysteria.

Astonishingly, it is the leaked Climategate emails themselves that expose the complicitness of the Associated Press in the Climategate scandal. Keen eyes at that excellent skeptic blog, Watts Up With That (WUWT), first uncovered the facts exposing media conspiracy in reporting Climategate. Blogger, Anthony Watts, found that AP had a ‘man on the inside’ of information from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit three months before the leaked emails surfaced.

It is those leaked emails that expose AP reporter, Seth Borenstein as a Climategate collaborator. So it came as no surprise to bloggers when AP ran the following in a ‘just-the-facts fashion’ on December 12, 2009 after the Climategate story broke:

“E-mails stolen from climate scientists show they stonewalled skeptics and discussed hiding data — but the messages don’t support claims that the science of global warming was faked, according to an exhaustive review by The Associated Press.” source

And whom did AP put in charge of their “exhaustive review”? Yes, you guessed it, Seth Borenstein.

Borenstein has long been known among climate commentators as an avid green sympathiser. As a sample of Borenstein’s affiliations look no further than the leaked email dated Jul 23, 2009 when Seth ‘just-the-facts’ Borenstein emailed his Climategate chums, Kevin Trenberth, Gavin Schmidt and Michael ‘Hockey Stick’ Mann, three months before Climategate:

“It’s Seth again. Attached is a paper in JGR today that
Marc Morano is hyping wildly. It’s in a legit journal. Whatchya think?
Seth
Seth Borenstein, Associated Press Science Writer
sborenstein@xxxxxxxxx.xxx”

Michael Mann’s reply:

“hi Seth, you always seem to catch me at airports. only got a
few minutes. took a cursory look at the paper, and it has all
the worry signs of extremely bad science and scholarship.”

Thus speaketh Michael ‘bad science’ Mann always available for a buddy like Seth. Whatchya think of that? To quantify how far AP journalism has fallen off it’s integrity perch just take a look here at their own code of conduct

Laughably, AP claims that:

“we avoid behavior or activities that create a conflict of interest and compromise our ability to report the news fairly and accurately, uninfluenced by any person or action.”

So if readers are troubled by AP’s “exhaustive review” you can phone or write and ask in a just-the-facts fashion at the following address:

The Associated Press, 1100 13th St. NW, Suite 700,
Washington, DC
20005-4076
Tel: 202-641-9454

World’s biggest coal company brings U.S. government to court in climate fraud

World’s biggest coal company brings U.S. government to court in climate fraud

John O’Sullivan

Feb. 17, 2010

The world’s largest private sector coal business, the Peabody Energy Company (PEC) has filed a mammoth 240-page “Petition for Reconsideration,” a full-blown legal challenge against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The petition must be answered and covers the entire body of leaked emails from ‘Climategate’ as well as those other ‘gate’ revelations including the frauds allegedly perpetrated under such sub-headings as ‘Himalayan Glaciers,’ ‘African Agricultural Production,’ ‘Amazon Rain Forests,’ ‘Melting Mountain Ice,’ ‘Netherlands Below Sea Level’ as well as those much-publicized abuses of the peer-review literature and so called ‘gray literature.’ These powerful litigants also draw attention to the proven criminal conduct by climate scientists in refusing to honor Freedom of Information law (FOIA) requests.

Peabody is, in effect, challenging the right of the current U.S. federal government to introduce cap and trade regulations by the ‘back door.’ In this article we summarize Peabody’s legal writ.

PEC has pulled out all the stops to overturn the EPA findings ‘Endangerment and Cause or Contribute Findings for Greenhouse Gases under Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act’ made on December 7, 2009. Those findings were in turn premised on the Supreme Court decision of April 2, 2007 of Massachusetts v. EPA, 549 U.S. 497 (2007), where the court ruled that greenhouse gases are air pollutants covered by the Clean Air Act.

PEC argues inter alia that the law requires that the federal agency must articulate a “rational connection between the facts found and the choice made” as per the case of Motor Vehicle Mfrs. Ass’n of the United States, Inc. v. State Farm Mutual Auto Ins. Co., 463 U.S. 29, 43 (1983).

The PEC arguments are based primarily on the release of email and other information from the University of East Anglia (“UEA”) Climatic Research Unit (“CRU”) in November of last year. Their civil action lists most of the principle scientists such as Professor Phil Jones, of the UK’s Climatic Research Unit, who recently admitted there has been no ‘statistically significant’ global warming for 15 years and agreed the Medieval Warm Period may have been just as warm, if not warmer than current global temperatures.
